Hello, everyone!
Our fundraising campaign launched today
Our Monday morning was off to an exciting start as we announced the support of Anna Tendler Mulaney and John Mulaney who are matching donations up to $20,000! Visit our donation page to double your impact, and we want to sincerely thank everyone who has already made a gift. By the way, if you have questions about making a gift, please contact rachel@fashionandrace.org. When you donate, your support directly funds our immediate and future endeavors:
Provide fair and incentivizing compensation for our staff, research assistants and contributors;
Introduce original teaching content such as lesson plans, customized reading lists and online lectures based on the latest and most critical topics.
(Among various other goals, but these are at the top of our list!)
Features: ‘Objects That Matter’
Have you checked out our very first OTM item? Our Research Assistant Adriana Hill published a profile of moccasins. The goal for our ‘Objects That Matter’ section is to feature numerous fashion objects, images and collections that have been under-researched or left out of fashion history books and museums, as well as objects designed with racist intent. This section gathers those items and provides a brief history. In addition, we explain why they matter, as many of these items have been widely appropriated or referenced.

Eastern, Sioux. Pair of Puckered Moccasins, early 19th century. Smoked buckskin, deer skin, deer hair, porcupine quills, copper, 10.2 x 27.9 cm. Brooklyn Museum, 50.67.20a-b. CC-BY (Photo: Brooklyn Museum)
Upcoming events
As a global network of events and conversations will continue to evolve the discourse on fashion and race, we’ve set up ‘The Calendar’ to keep you looped in. This week, artist and educator Nirmal Raja will explain her creative practice for ‘CDMC Conversations’ on July 15. Head to the calendar for details about the event.
Help us expand the database
Visit our ‘Contact Us’ page to send us pitches for content, events you’d like to share to ‘The Calendar’ and items you’d like to see in ‘The Library.’ We definitely have a backlog of content that we are working to upload this week and in the weeks to come, but we always love feedback from the community!
Yours in service and solidarity,
The Project Team
