You're invited: "Shopping while Black" lecture + discussion with Kim Jenkins
Takes place this Saturday, December 7 at 12:00pm EDT
About:
Join FRD Founder Kim Jenkins as she presents and teaches one of her favorite works of scholarship on the topic of "Race and Retail" – the article, "Shopping while Black: Black consumers’ management of racial stigma and racial profiling in retail settings" by Cassi Pittman-Claytor.
The structure of this event will begin with Kim presenting Pittman-Claytor's key findings and arguments from the article via slideshow (50 minutes), followed by an open discussion for guests to react to the article and reflect on personal experiences or observations (30 minutes).
Pre-reading the article will not be necessary for this event, but you can find it from Sage Journals, or the summary from The Guardian.
Closed captioning will be provided, and the event will be recorded, accessible to FRD members. Please keep this in mind when it comes to having your camera on, or sharing vulnerable stories.
Note:
Please exercise compassion and thoughtfulness during this event, acknowledging any privilege you may have when it comes to the experiences of guests in the room who identify as Black as well as the subjects of Pittman-Claytor's research.
Registration:
Tickets are offered on a sliding scale from $7.00 - $25.00, but paying FRD Substack Community subscribers will receive a promo code to register free of charge.
