The Fashion and Race Database is the first and most trusted education platform that provides dedicated research and programming, guided by subject matter experts, to advocate diversity and explore the longstanding impact of race and misrepresentation in fashion. Founded in 2017 by fashion scholar Kimberly Jenkins.

We founded The Fashion and Race Database (FRD) Substack Community in 2024 as a complement to our acclaimed member-based website. In today’s political climate, we felt the need for a private, community space for those who appreciate the history and culture of fashion, but believe that the fashion and beauty industry needs to improve when it comes to diversity and sustainability.

FRD Community subscribers will enjoy monthly blog posts and prompts for discussion, as well as monthly virtual gatherings to explore myriad aspects of “fashion and race” more deeply.

We provide a 100% discount on FRD Substack Community paid subscriptions to students, faculty and staff of accredited educational institutions. If you have an email address ending in .edu, click on the Subscribe button, and you’ll be offered the discount automatically. If you’re a student and don’t see the student discount appear on the Subscribe page, reach out to me at info@fashionandrace.org and we’ll give you access to the discount.
